![]() Welcome to the second edition of our new CICR newsletter! The new academic year is off to a good start, our 2020 graduates are studying for October bar exams, and our students are working hard. A number of first-year classes are taking place in person, but almost all of our upper-division courses are online. So far, all is going well as we adapt to these challenging times. We continue to work on expanding our program as we explore possible relationships with professional organizations, identify externship opportunities, and develop our curriculum. In all of these endeavors, we are seeking to build a community of alumni, students, and friends working in related areas. We would love your input as we continue to develop and grow our new program. Thanks to those of you who already have responded. As always, if you have friends or colleagues who would be interested, please forward the newsletter to them and let us know their names and contact information by email to me at duggin@cua.edu or to Kate Smith at smithcat@cua.edu. Please see below for more exciting news and stories about alumni and faculty and a note from Dean Stephen Payne. As noted below, we are planning a series of online programs on Business Accountability for Human Rights. The first program is scheduled for October 22nd at 5:00 pm EDST. Please keep safe & well, Sarah A Message From Dean Stephen C. Payne ![]() Welcome to the new CICR community! I am delighted that we have so many terrific alumni devoting their careers to matters that touch on compliance, investigations, and corporate responsibility. As many of you are aware, I spent a significant part of my career in private practice in these fields. I helped clients establish and evaluate corporate compliance policies and programs and handled FDA and health care regulatory compliance matters, internal investigations, and enforcement litigation. It was a rewarding area of practice.
All of us who practice in these fields share a common goal of working to build and support organizations with a strong sense of ethics and integrity. Thank you for the work you do. As we continue to move forward, we hope that you all will engage with the CICR Program and the Law School in one way or another. Please get in touch with Sarah (duggin@cua.edu) if you'd like to talk about ways you can become involved with our program and our students. We welcome your ideas! Fall 2021 Conference & Preliminary Events: Business Accountability for Human Rights The CICR Program and the Law School will sponsor a conference on Corporate Responsibility: Business Accountability for Human Rights in the fall of 2021. Preliminary online events begin on October 22nd at 5 pm with a program on Business Accountability for Human Rights: The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic featuring Kevin Hyland, O.B.E., the United Kingdom's first Independent Antislavery Commissioner; Mark Holden '88, Vice President of Stand Together and formerly Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Koch Industries, Inc.; and John Durkalski '05, Partner, Butsavage & Durkalski, P.C., formerly Program and Media Relations Coordinator, ACLU of Ohio. We hope to engage the legal academy, practitioners, the corporate sector, and, most importantly, our own alumni, students, and faculty in a day-long conference on this important subject. Stay tuned for more details, and please contact Professor Duggin (duggin@cua.edu) if you are interested in participating, planning, or suggesting topics and speakers for the conference.
Alumni Mentors, Speakers & Supporters Needed! We continue to welcome your input as we continue to develop and expand our new program. Thanks to those of you who already have volunteered to serve as mentors or speakers. We are working to match alumni and students, and we are working on new programs, We especially need more alumni willing to talk with current students about career possibilities -- even if it's just a phone call or email exchange. If you can help -- or if you are interested in teaching, speaking, or simply offering your thoughts -- please email Sarah Duggin at duggin@cua.edu.
Adjunct Faculty Stars Meet two more members of our star adjunct faculty! Kelly Donovan ![]() Adjunct Professor Kelly Donovan '93 teaches Risk Management, Audit and Financial Controls. She is a Managing Director in the New York City office of KPMG's U.S. Advisory Services, Risk Consultant Practice. In this role Ms. Donovan conducts state and national investigations of misconduct and fraud allegations and designs and implement regulatory compliance programs. She also leads a number of other public and private sector internal investigations and assists clients with third- party due diligence and integrity monitoring.
Prior to joining KPMG, Kelly served for more than twenty years in the public sector. As Executive Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice in the New York State Attorney General's Office, she was responsible for all five principal bureaus, including financial crimes and public integrity offices, the organized crime task force, the taxpayer protection bureau, and the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. There she led investigations and issued reports pertaining to allegations of misconduct, fraud and waste involving more than 150 state agencies. Kelly began her career with the New York County District Attorney's Office where she served in several positions, including Deputy Chief of the Labor Racketeering Unit.
Kelly now serves as a member of the Law School's Board of Visitors. On a lighter note, she also has experience in the entertainment industry as the Technical Consultant for Seasons two and three of the hit CBS television show Blue Bloods.
In the words of CICR student Denise Isaacs: "Professor Donovan has the rare ability to explain the balance between risk management and effective financial controls and they affect a company's success. As I pursue a career in compliance and corporate responsibility, understanding the practice of forensic investigations and auditing to create financial controls is imperative. The added bonus of learning it from an attorney with extensive experience in criminal and labor law was invaluable."
Christopher Savage ![]() Adjunct Professor Chris Savage teaches Information Privacy. Chris is a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine. After serving for many years as Co-Chair of the firm's Communications Practice, Chris now focuses his practice on privacy and data security matters. Before joining Davis Wright Tremaine, Chris led the Telecom Practice at Cole, Raywid & Braverman, LLP after several years as a senior attorney with Bell Atlantic Network Services Inc. Chris currently counsels clients in communications and data-centric industries on complex privacy and data security issues. His most recent article, published in the Stanford Technology Law Review, is entitled, Managing the Ambient Trust Commons: The Economics of Online Consumer Information Privacy, 22 Stan. Tech. Rev. 95 (2019)
When he's not teaching, Chris enjoys My running, hiking, and reading (mainly, these days, history and science fiction). He convenes at least weekly with a number of friends for informal "adult education" classes. Recent topics include Reconstruction and Jim Crow, a history of Eastern Europe, an exploration of the lives of people of the Steppes (Mongols and their earlier compatriots), neuroscience, and basic structural engineering.
Professor Savage's teaching is an integral part of the CICR program. In his words, "Every organization, large or small, needs to comply with complicated and overlapping rules protecting the privacy of consumers, employees and others. I'm proud that CUA's Compliance, Investigations & Corporate Responsibility program includes Information Privacy Law as part of the grounding needed to ensure that organizations fulfill their legal responsibilities."
Alumni Spotlight Michael Dillon ![]() Michael Dillon '19 focuses on data privacy compliance in his work with the advisory branch of Deloitte. Mike was one of the first class CICR winners. He recognized his interest in the compliance field during law school and took related courses in the hope that the new certificate program would soon become a reality. Once the University granted final approval to CICR, Mike was one of the first to enroll in the program. He strongly believes that his program credentials helped him get his job, while the skills he learned in CICR classes have helped him excel in his role of assisting clients with compliance with the Privacy Act of 1974. Mike is involved with many significant issues, including conducting privacy impact assessments. Michael credits Adjunct Professor Savage's Information Privacy course, part of the CICR curriculum, with opening doors at Deloitte. Mike's employers were intrigued that Michael had a background in Information Privacy. The CICR course in Risk Management, taught by adjunct professors Kelly Donovan and Chris Pilkerton gave Michael a great framework for the work he does. Michael notes that the writing skills he developed in law school have helped him tremendously, particularly his directed research project with adjunct Professor Vin Lacovara. "Multiple readers look at my writing products and the precision I learned through my directed research project with Professor Lacovara. All of my CICR classes really helped me learn to be direct and clear so everyone who reads a document has no trouble following the key points."
In Mike's words, "The CICR program was such a rewarding experience for me. It gave me a broad base of knowledge in terms of compliance, because it allowed me to see all of the different aspects of compliance, investigations and risk management. The Information Privacy course prepared me for my compliance role within Deloitte. I continue to build on the knowledge that I learned in these CICR courses to help solve various problems that arise and test the bounds of compliance."
