On March 22, 2018, The Military and National Security Law Association, with RNLA, DLSA, and The Federalist Society presented Current Issues in National Security Law: Balancing Competing Domestic and International Equities.

The event featured presentations from Richard Pregent, national security legal advisor and former Justice Advocate; Erica Bosmey, National Counter terrorism Center; COL Laura Calese, National Defense University; and COL John Howard, US Army Intelligence and Security Command.

Pregent opened the event by providing a historical background for the current U.S. national security laws. He discussed events such as the Vietnam War, The Civil Rights Act, The Fair Housing Act, the Pentagon Papers, Water Gate, The War Powers Act, Executive Order 12333, 9/11, and the Patriot Act. He also touched on recent microtargeting and the weaponization of data.

The panelists discussed topics such as privacy vs. national security, intelligence and integration at the national level, partnering with foreign forces, and the protection of classified information. They also discussed the importance of not politicizing national security matters.

Following the presentation, panelists took questions for the audience. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and guests were also invited to a reception in the Keelty Atrium for a chance to speak with the panelists.
