On Saturday, October 20, 2018, The Black Law Students Association participated in the annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk hosted by the American Cancer Society. BLSA executive board members Onyinyechi Onungwa (3L), Nastashia Matos (3L), Willie Burden (3L), Maria Lino Callao (2L), Ashnelly Rodriguez (2L), Rayven Davis (3E), and Victoria Boyle (3L) walked the two mile route around the Tidal Basin. At 9:15AM, the ceremony began by recognizing the survivors, caregivers, and individuals from all walks of life who are passionate about saving lives from breast cancer. Participants also engaged in warm up activities, such as Zumba and CorePower Yoga. The main walk event began promptly at 10:00AM and Team CUA Law finished in less than an hour.

BLSA President, Onyinyechi Onungwa stated that, "BLSA participated in this event as a part of the Law School's Wellness Month initiative and because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The organization wanted to give back to the community and raise awareness on a health issue that can affect anyone." BLSA Social Action Chair, Maria Callao Lino was the activity leader and coined the name "Team CUA Law." This year, BLSA chose to honor friends and family members of the CUA community who were directly affected by breast cancer. The organization walked and donated money to honor Emilia Nwaobilor, a 29-year old woman who sadly passed away from breast cancer in July of this year.

BLSA also walked to honor breast cancer survivors, Margot Lino and Erica Dickerson, a recent breast cancer survivor, who attended and completed the walk with Team CUA Law. Erica Dickerson has a family history of breast cancer. She suffered the loss of two aunts, but is fortunate to have her mother, who is also a breast-cancer survivor. She stated that, "I am humbled and filled with gratitude to be honored by BLSA, during such a difficult time in my life. It is important to recognize those individuals who contribute to our community. Such support is important and admirable work."

BLSA initiated a donation goal of $1,000 but was able to exceed that goal, finishing off at $1,303 in donations. BLSA Evening Vice President, Rayven Davis and Secretary, Ashnelly Rodriguez stated that, "It was such an honor to be surrounded by such an overwhelmingly powerful energy. Breast Cancer survivors are champions and we hope that BLSA's contributions were able to support them, their caretakers and their families."
