On October 13, 2022, Catholic Law's Office of Career and Professional Development held it's Employer Spotlight Series with Damon Smith, General Counsel, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Amy Morath, Senior Advisor in the Office of General Counsel at U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Operations. The speakers discussed their experiences with HUD and the wide variety of work available there.
Both Smith and Morath were also showcasing HUD's Office of General Counsel (OGC) Legal Honors Program. This is OGC's primary program for entry-level attorneys. Successful candidates participate in a 14-month appointment, and are provided opportunities to rotate through OGC Divisions in Headquarters and Regional and Field offices. Legal Honors placed in Headquarters rotate through at least three offices within Headquarters with opportunities to rotate into a Regional or Field office. Legal Honors placed in Regional or Field Offices rotate through both the Program Services and Litigation Divisions for six months and pursue at least one rotation in Headquarters. The application deadline is October 17, 2022. More information and application information can be found here.
Following the program both representatives from HUD stayed to answer questions and speak further with students. The speakers also were asked if there were oppotunities for law students who were in their second-year. Morath noted that HUD does have externship opportunities as well, and further information about those programs can be found here.
The event was co-sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, Black Law Students Association, Latin American Law Students Association, Evening Law Students Association, and Students for Public Iinterest Law.
