Each year, Catholic Law first-year students who are interested in joining the Moot Court Association (MCA) participate in the annual SoapBox competition. The intraschool competition gives students a taste of appellate advocacy and an opportunity to test their skills in a lower-stakes environment.
On Saturday, February 11, and Sunday, February 12, first-year students competed over Zoom in a round-robin style tournament—with MCA members in their second and third years acting as judges. The judges for the final round were Zach Aman (3L), Zoe Spirgel (3L), Aema Zaidi (3L), Joe Cipollone (3L), Dasol Lee (3L), Lauren Ferraro (4E), and Mariyah Wakhariya (3L) and the bailiff was Casey Magersupp (2L). Gerald Sharpe and Samantha Winter were the tournament’s top two finishers in a field of 27 competitors. Ultimately, Winter went on to win the competition, but both were extended offers to join MCA's 2023-24 competition team.
Zoe Spirgel, Chancellor/Chief Executive Officer of the Moot Court Association, shared “Thank you to all those who participated in Soapbox 2023! You all put so much time and effort into preparation and it was a wonderful competition.”
