Professor Marshall Breger was the recipient of an American Jewish Press Association's (AJPA) 42nd Annual Simon Rockower Jewish Journalism Award. He was awarded first place, the Louis Rappoport Award for Excellence in Commentary. The award was given for the following articles:
- His attendance at the Forum on Common Values Among Religious Followers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and what religious toleration portends for the Saudi-Israel relationship (Moment Magazine, “Not your Grandfather’s Saudi Arabia”).
- A Christian Football coach in the state of Washington and how the Supreme Court’s decision in his case “moves the goalposts on church-state separation” (Moment Magazine, “The Case of the Praying Coach”).
- Israel’s Orthodox definition of Judaism for public functions and personal status issues (such as marriage) vs. public sentiment (Moment Magazine, “A Jewish State but What Kind?”).
In 2022, Breger received a Rockower award for Excellence in Interfaith Religious Reporting for his article about the fractious politics of the Temple Mount, “Mine, Mine, All Mine”. In that article, he explains the various meanings of sovereignty in international law and their impact of holy places in Jerusalem and elsewhere.
In 1979, as a century tribute to him by his sons, the Rockower family created the Simon Rockower Jewish Journalism Awards to honor Simon Rockower and his deep love for the craft of Jewish Journalism.
