The Columbus School of Law's Moot Court Association will for the first time sponsor a three-student team to compete in the 2015 National Baseball Arbitration Competition, held at Tulane University in New Orleans from Jan. 28-30.
Like most law school moot court competitions, the competition's main goal is to provide participants with the opportunity to sharpen their oral and written advocacy skills.

However, the competition is unique in that it allows law students to sharpen these skills within the specialized field of alternative dispute resolution ("ADR") that utilizes arbitration, mediation, and negotiation as substitutes for traditional litigation.
Run by the Tulane Sports Law Society, the alternative dispute resolution competition is a simulated salary arbitration modeled closely on the procedures used by Major League Baseball, requiring participants to utilize the statistics of real-life players and teams. Representing CUA Law are 4E Mike Bzozowski, 3D Jaclyn Kavendek, and 2D Christopher Geissler. "We are excited to participate because it give us a chance to represent the school at one of the premier sports law competitions in the country," says Bzozowski. "The competition gives us a unique opportunity to use a topic like baseball to develop written and oral advocacy skills. We are proud to be the first arbitration team sponsored by the Moot Court Association and hope that we can help send students to ADR competitions next year." CUA Law's Moot Court Association has traditionally focused on appellate advocacy and has sent its members nationwide to compete in interscholastic competitions. "I believe the addition of a new alternative dispute resolution competition presents a great opportunity for the school and the Association, especially with the continued increase in use of ADR in legal practice, said 3D Daniel Kane, chief financial officer for the 2014-15 Moot Court Association.
