This past week has witnessed the unfolding of Operation Varsity Blues, in which well-known, well-heeled, well-connected parents stand accused of paying tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to bribe coaches, counselors and administrators to guarantee their children's admission to the universities of their choice.

Only time will tell how these criminal investigations will end. However, this unfolding drama raises far deeper, more troubling questions than the simple fates of these particular defendants.
