The Second Annual Cardinal Classic Softball Tournament took place on Friday, October 18, at the Catholic Softball Field. The student, faculty, and staff softball tournament featured three games in all, with Umpire Marin Scordato behind the plate calling balls and strikes, Ed Lafayette '10 serving as a field umpire, Anika Smith (3L) singing the National Anthem, and students Paige Markley (3L) and Michelle Maffeo (1L) announcing the play-by-play action on the field.
The first round of the tournament pitted 1Ls against 2Ls. With a strong comeback in the penultimate inning, the 1Ls narrowly defeated their 2L rivals. The 1Ls then faced off against a seasoned 3L team. After a long game, it was a draw resulting in the two student teams combining to play the faculty/staff team in the championship round.
In a surprising turn of events, the faculty/staff team got the better of the student team with a decisive 17-7 win taking home the Cardinal Classic trophy. Dean Stephen Payne won the MVP award for his defensive skills in the outfield and three home runs at the plate.
