On September 22, 2022, the Black Law Student Mentoring and Leadership Program hosted an evening program, “Making a Difference Through Mentorship,” followed by a networking reception.
To begin the program, Veryl Miles ’80, professor of law and former dean of the Law School, welcomed the group, and Dean Stephen Payne provided a few introductory remarks about the program. He noted, “I’m so excited about this initiative. We have a great history of supporting students here, but folks in this room have done a great job in really seeking to enhance that year-over-year […] I’m really proud of the efforts that Dean Miles has made in starting our new Black Law Student Mentoring and Leadership Program and of Assistant Dean Shani Butts who has been our Diversity Officer since the spring of 2022 […] We are all here for the same reason, and that is to help our students succeed.”
Miles then began a moderated panel discussion regarding how the initiative is working thus far. Those in attendance heard from one of the initiative’s mentors D. Michael Lyles ’94, who serves as City Attorney for Annapolis, as well as mentee Lalla Maiga (3E). Maiga discussed what she was looking for when she first heard about this initiative as well as the ways in which her mentor has been helpful to her. Lyles spoke from the mentor's perspective, outlining best practices (like being open and accessible to law students) and the importance of mentorship to him. Others in attendance were also invited to share their own experiences and how mentoring has impacted them. Following the discussion, the group adjourned to the Louise H. Keelty and James Keelty, Jr. Atrium for networking and refreshments.
The Black Law Student Mentoring and Leadership Program is a comprehensive effort to empower Catholic Law students at all stages of their legal careers. Throughout their time here, our Black law students may receive one-on-one mentoring and career advice from faculty members, become part of an active and high-achieving community of Black law students and come to know alumni who provide networking opportunities.
