Assistant Professor J. Joel Alicea, Co-Director of the Project on Constitutional Originalism and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition at The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law (Catholic Law), recently participated in a panel discussion alongside the Cato Institute’s Anastasia Boden and Notre Dame Law School’s Sherif Girgis. Hosted by the National Constitution Center and moderated by its CEO Jeffrey Rosen, the June 28 townhall, entitled “The Modern History of Originalism,” the panelists discussed the modern formulation of constitutional originalism and the clarity with which recent Supreme Court justices have expressed it in their opinions on recent rulings. The discussion also included a debate surrounding the definition of originalism, closing with each panelist detailing the arguments that make originalism attractive to them.
