Law students Jasmine Roundtree (2E), Katherine Mars (1E), and the Office of Career and Professional Development's Director of Pro Bono & Public Interest, Rachel Lawrence, participated in The Catholic University of America's 2024 MLK Day of Service. The members of the law school joined the University's President, Peter K. Kilpatrick, his wife, Nancy Kilpatrick, and a group of undergraduate students of the University to volunteer at the Little Sisters for the Poor. The group connected with seniors living there, prayed the rosary, and went to mass with residents. The law school community joined over 700 participants from the University to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s commitment to service.
President Kilpatrick provided opening remarks along with undergraduate student leaders and Campus Ministry. The following quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shared before volunteers dispersed, "One of the greatest problems of history is that the concepts of love and power are usually contrasted as polar opposites. Love is identified with a resignation of power and power with a denial of love. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive and that love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love."
The day of service was hosted by the University's Office of Campus Ministry.
