Catholic Law’s Professor Mark Rienzi, director of the Law School’s Center for Religious Liberty, was recently interviewed by CBS News. Commenting in his capacity as president of The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, Rienzi discussed an ongoing lawsuit against the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in regards to a controversial encampment on its campus throughout April and May 2024 and the antisemitism present at UCLA.

Rienzi was also quoted in The Becket Fund’s press release announcing the court case, Frankel v. Regents of the University of California. That press release is available for viewing here, and the complaint in the case is available here. Below are Rienzi’s remarks from the CBS article.

Jewish Students Sue UCLA over Pro-Palestinian Encampment


Becket, a nonprofit specializing in religious rights, and the law firm Clement & Murphy, PLLC filed the lawsuit on behalf of two law students and an undergraduate student.

“If masked agitators had excluded any other marginalized group at UCLA, Governor Newsom rightly would have sent in the National Guard immediately,” said Mark Rienzi, president of the nonprofit.

Rienzi alleged that UCLA capitulated to the demonstrators and "allowed its Jewish students to be segregated from the heart of their own campus."
