On September 16, 2020, Catholic Law Professor Lucia Silecchia participated in a virtual program entitled, “The Threat of the Throwaway Culture to the Elderly in a Time of COVID,” hosted by Fordham University School of Law. Endy Moraes, Director of the Institute of Religion, Law, and Lawyers Work at Fordham University moderated the discussion with Silecchia and Fordham Professor Charles Camosy.
The program’s discussion focused on the current pandemic and how it has revealed challenges faced by how our elders are cared for in the United States. Silecchia and Camosy discussed how public health and medical care choices impact the elderly populations, the conditions of congregate living in our country, and the conflict between generations that might inform how policymakers protect the nation’s elderly and most vulnerable. Throughout the event audience members were able to submit questions to the panelists for their thoughts.
