Stephanie Shark, Laurie Besden, and Judge William Carpenter
From L to R: Stephanie Shark, Laurie Besden, and Judge William Carpenter

On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Catholic Law’s Office of Student Life hosted an inspiring event titled "Justice, Recovery, Resilience, and Redemption: A Story of Unlikely Connections." The panel featured a compelling discussion between Laurie Besden, a former defendant; Judge William Carpenter; and FBI Special Agent Stephanie Shark. Together, they shared an extraordinary story about the transformative power of justice, recovery, and second chances.

The discussion opened with Special Agent Stephanie Shark setting the tone, followed by Laurie Besden sharing her powerful story of addiction, legal troubles, and eventual redemption. Once a practicing attorney, Laurie faced multiple arrests and charges that led to the loss of her law license and time in jail. Special Agent Stephanie Shark, then a prosecutor, was assigned to her case. Initially, Shark viewed Laurie as a privileged attorney abusing drugs and believed she deserved a harsh state prison sentence. However, over time, Shark’s perspective shifted as she came to recognize the value of second chances and the potential for recovery.

Judge William Carpenter, a respected figure known for his firm but fair approach, presided over Laurie’s sentencing. While he handed down a significant county sentence, he also extended an opportunity for rehabilitation. In an unprecedented move, Judge Carpenter required Laurie to write annual letters updating him on her progress. This unique gesture became a cornerstone of Laurie’s recovery journey and sparked a profound turning point in her life. Over time, Laurie not only regained her law license but also became a dedicated advocate, helping others fight against addiction.

Stephanie Shark, Laurie Besden, and Judge William CarpenterWhat makes their story remarkable is the transformation of their roles. Once adversaries within the justice system, Laurie, Judge Carpenter, and Special Agent Shark became unlikely allies in Laurie’s path to recovery. Reflecting on these relationships, Laurie shared, “I would not be where I am if he [Judge Carpenter] hadn’t sent me to prison for a year or if she [Agent Shark] hadn’t argued for state time… These relationships that have come from this situation are, without question, the most powerful and impactful relationships in my life.”

This powerful discussion highlights the potential for justice and compassion to intersect, creating opportunities for change and redemption. Watch the full video here below.
