The Comparative and International Law Institute at Catholic Law, in partnership with the International Law Students Association, recently hosted a discussion and Q&A session focused on careers in international law. The event featured Eric L. Hirschhorn, former Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security and retired partner at Winston & Strawn LLP. The discussion was moderated by Professor Susanna Frederick Fischer, Director of the Comparative and International Law Institute and the Human Rights Summer Law Program in Rome at Catholic Law.
During the session, Hirschhorn shared his career journey, offered valuable best practices, and provided insightful guidance for pursuing careers in international law. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students had the opportunity to ask questions and gain further insights from his extensive experience.
Eric L. Hirschhorn has had a distinguished career in international law with a focus on international trade, export controls, and economic sanctions. His work for the U.S. government has included serving as Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security. In that capacity, he headed the Bureau of Industry and Security, which administers U.S. export controls and restricts imports for national security reasons. His work in private practice as a partner in the DC office of Winston & Strawn LLP has included advising and assisting clients regarding export controls and economic sanctions, as well as international transactions. His litigation practice included trials and appeals in federal and state courts and arbitration proceedings. Mr. Hirschhorn has authored many publications on export controls and economic sanctions, including serving as lead author of the fourth edition of U.S. Export Controls and Economic Sanctions (Oxford University Press, 2022).
