Dean's Benefit Student Speaker

Nico-ValderamaNicolas Valderama - I am a third year law student pursuing a certificate from the Securities Law Program. I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia and I came to the US to pursue my college education in 2013 through an athletic scholarship from the George Washington University Varsity Men’s Squash Team.

After earning my Bachelors degree in Economics, I took a year off to work as Operations Director for a small sports management company and prepare my law school application. Then, in 2018, I was accepted into the Columbus School of Law (CUA Law).

At CUA Law I have engaged in various extracurricular activities that have enhanced my academic experience and allowed me to give back for all the financial, academic, and career support that law school has provided. I currently serve as president of the Latin American Law Student Association, Vice President of the Securities Law Student Association, Editor for the Catholic University Law Review, and Research Assistant for Professor Emerita Leah Wortham. Similarly, in prior semesters I took on roles as a Competing Member on the Securities Law Moot Court Competition and Class Representative on the Pro Bono Advisory Board.

During my time at CUA Law I have also been able to advance my career through internship and job opportunities. Specifically, I have served as a Student Attorney for the Columbus Community Legal Services, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic; as a Legal Intern for the Front Office of the Legal Vice Presidency of the World Bank; and, since last summer, as a Legal Intern with the Investment Company Institute (ICI). Now at ICI, I especially enjoy exploring the world of investment management and applying what I have learned in my securities law courses.

This spring, I will become the first in my family to pursue an education in the US and the first to earn a law degree. I have also accepted a post-grad position with the ICI in their Washington, D.C. office.
