On Thursday, June 15, 2023, the Securities Law Program hosted its annual Securities Law Alumni and Student Mixer, where recent graduates were recognized for their accomplishments at the networking event.

On Thursday, May 18, 2023, graduating students who specialized in subjects beyond the general J.D. curriculum, were presented with certificates at the annual Certificate Ceremony. Faculty representatives of the five certificate programs recognized recipients of their respective certifications as specialists in specific, focused areas of law.

On February 21, 2023, Catholic Law's Securities Law Program, under the leadership of Program Director and Adjunct Law Professor Jack W. Murphy, held its 39th Annual Securities Law Alumni Luncheon at the Army and Navy Club in downtown Washington, D.C. The group of current securities students, securities law graduates, and several members of the securities adjunct faculty, along with Professor Murphy and guest speaker Eric J. Pan, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Company Institute, mingled together in the welcoming hall.

On November 9, 2022, OCPD’s Professional Development Program for 1Ls examined the broad scope of legal practice areas and settings, as well as competencies legal professionals must develop beyond subject matter expertise. Directors of the five Law School Institutes and Special Programs talked about their respective specializations, and they encouraged students to consider their strengths, interests, and goals as they plan for their future careers.

On October 28, 2022, Catholic Law, in collaboration with Catholic University’s Busch School of Business and Dechert LLP, hosted the Conference on Environmental, Social, and Governance Investing Under the Federal Securities Laws, which explored Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investing; recent SEC proposals relating to ESG investing; SEC compliance and enforcement issues; and ESG developments outside the U.S. The conference was coordinated by Jack W. Murphy, Director of the Securities Law Program at Catholic Law. Continuing Legal Education credit was available for attendees, who were able to attend the conference either in person or through an online webinar.

On May 19, 2022, five graduating students received the certificate in Securities Law at the annual 2022 Certificate Ceremony. Jack Murphy, serving in his first year as Director of SLP, spoke about the drive and passion exhibited by this year’s securities students. He concluded, “I’ve gotten to know the students very well and they are an impressive bunch.”

Exploring “Different Paths to Success” With the Securities Law Program - Six alumni panelists shared their career trajectories in the securities law industry and how their law school education prepared them for success. While each had their own unique path, their answers highlighted the importance of community and networking that came from their time at Catholic Law.

May 13, 2021, the annual Securities Law Alumni and Student Mixer at Bobby Van's Steakhouse, Washington, D.C., resumed after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19.  

On November 4, 2021, Securities practice group alumni and students gathered at the Army and Navy Club in downtown Washington, D.C for the CUA Law 38th Annual Securities Law Luncheon. Jennifer W. Han, Chief Counsel & Head of Regulatory Affairs for the Managed Funds Association, spoke broadly about trade associations, what they are, how they work, and the perspective they are able to offer to other organizations and government agencies. Han used the second half of her talk to speak more specifically about a few “hot topics” in the securities space.

Catholic Law Alumna Hope Jarkowski ’02 was the  Keynote Speaker at NextGen Washington, D.C., a peer network for women in the first decade of their finance careers. The event welcomed global members to hear about trading, technology, policy, and markets.

Contemporary Challenges in American and Global Law Concludes with a Conversation on “European and US Perspectives on Investment Fund Regulation.  Attendees from both the Catholic Law and the Jagiellonian University communities joined to hear the conversation led by Wictor Furman (CUA LL.M. 2009), Force Advokatbyrå in Stockholm, Sweden, with comments made by James V. Catano ’11, Partner at Dechert in Washington, D.C.

November 12, 2020, Catholic Law’s Securities Law Program (SLP) and Securities Law Students Association (SLSA) hosted a virtual discussion with Hester Peirce, a commissioner at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

October 2, 2019, the Securities Law Program presented Muddy Waters Clearing Up:the Evolving State & Federal Status of a Best Interest Standard for Broker-Dealer and Investment Advisers. The guest speakers were The Honorable Phyllis Borzi ’78, Former Assistant Secretary, Department of Labor and Catholic Law Board of Visitors Member Carl Wilkerson ’78, Vice President and Chief Counsel-Securities; American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI).

June 2014 – Three Alumni of the Securities Law Program and an Emeritus Adjunct assisted the School by working to have their nationally recognized law firms to commit to interviewing CUA law students, on our campus, for 2L Summer Internships.   The firms that were added to our list of firms interviewing on campus are Dechert (Alumnus and Adjunct Professor Jeffrey Puretz); Bingham (Emeritus Adjunct Professor John Arnholz); Goodwin (Alumni Paul Delligatti and James Catano).

Coincidentally, the same week that these three firms decided to interview at the Law School, The Wall Street Journal ran a story on June 23rd with the following headline on the front page of their second section: “Big Law Firms Resume Hiring.”

The story went on to note: “Entry-level hiring at major law firms is ramping back up from the recession era doldrums.”

Congratulations to the 2014 Securities Law Program graduates! 

This year, the Securities Law Program graduated ten students.   By mid-June, half of those students already were placed.  Also by mid-June, all of the student already had one or more employment interviews.
